Seeking truth on the university campus, "Is Faith in God reasonable?" Recap

Veritas Update

Mark & Roxanne Johnson serve with Cru at IU-Bloominton. Grace Church partners with them as they seek to develop fully devoted followers of Christ on the university campus.  Please read their report on the recent Veritas Forum. Please pray for ongoing conversations to move from curious questions to life change.

"On Tuesday, Oct. 28, roughly 2000 students, faculty, and community members flooded into the IU Auditorium to hear Christian MIT professor Troy Van Voorhis and atheist IU professor Colin Allen discuss the question "Is Faith in God Reasonable?" Both professors opened with a brief 10 minute presentation and then spent the rest of the evening having a cordial discussion about faith, science, and the rationality of the spiritual world.
The pair managed to cover quite a lot of intellectual ground and ultimately proved that conversations about the deep, significant issues we face do not need to be heated or antagonistic. Professor Van Voorhis proved to be warm, humble, genuine, and unashamed of Jesus. It was very clear that believing in Christ did not require one to sacrifice reason or a love of science (Dr. Van Voorhis is a chemist).

Overall, we were most encouraged by the university community's willingness and general eagerness to engage in this important dialogue. It is our hope that many many more conversations about Jesus Christ and who He is will be born out of Tuesday's discussion. It was fantastic that so many attended, but our real aim was to spark ongoing gospel opportunities for people to hear and respond to our Lord."

Attenders were asked on comment cards "What's your biggest takeaway after tonight's Veritas Forum?" These are some responses:
  • "I need to have more of these conversations."
  • "I think it's important to ask the tough questions."
  • "Christianity is...worth discussing and holds its own very well."
  • "The Christian worldview holds up to public, open scrutiny and discussion, even in a university setting."
Thank you for the prayers you offered up on behalf of the Forum. It is a blessing and privilege to be ministering here at IU and seeing the Lord move in the hearts of so many. Please continue to pray that students and faculty will come to know Christ through seeds that were planted on Tuesday. Thank you for being a blessing to us!

Blessings,
Mark and Roxanne"
